Job Overview

The Guest Relations Associate is an engaging role at the forefront of customer service at the Michigan Science Center, primarily working at the Box Office and Science Store. Additional Guest Relations work locations may also include Kidstown, Toyota Engineering Theater, IMAX Dome Theatre, and the office level. The ideal candidate will be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail is vital, will be confident and self-directed when providing excellent customer service, and report guest feedback to management in a timely manner. This is a chance for a motivated individual to help bring science, technology, math, and engineering to life for students and families in our community.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide excellent customer service to all members and guests entering the museum by upselling unique Michigan Science Center experiences including theaters, exhibits, membership, and merchandise.
  • Become the eyes and ears of the guest experience and building conditions, and effectively communicate concerns through proper channels.
  • Ensure show readiness by arranging stanchions and signage and keeping work areas secure.
  • Track lost and found items.
  • Open and close out cash registers in accordance with strict cash handling procedures.
  • Support additional guest experience locations including membership fulfillment, group reservations, and call center operations as needed.
  • Be knowledgeable about the museum and its internal and external public products and services.
  • Direct guests around the museum and help with upkeep of museum floor appearances throughout the day.
  • Maintain data confidentiality in compliance with legal requirements and MiSci standards of excellence.
  • Promptly and effectively deal with guest requests and complaints.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED completion required and must be at least 18 years of age.
  • 2 or more years of experience in point-of-sales, reservations, telemarketing, and/or customer relations required.
  • Computer, cash handling, and credit card processing experience required.
  • Must be able to speak and write clearly in English; communicate professionally in person, over the phone, and by email.
  • Must be able to work a flexible part time schedule including weekdays, weekends and occasional evening hours.
  • Must not have legal restrictions on working with children.

Physical Demands

Walk throughout large Science Center between multiple floors, lift and move ≤25 lbs. from time to time and either stand at a counter or sit at a desk for the entirety of a 4-10 hour shift, with occasional kneeling, bending, twisting; use computers, tablets, scanners, and telephones with headsets for whole shifts.

Michigan Science Center’s Educators excite audiences through electrifying live Science Stage demonstrations, STEM-focused workshops and classes, and by providing children and families with a warm welcome to a world of possibility by engaging in our exhibit galleries. Michigan Science Center inspires curious minds of all ages every year through STEM discovery and interactive education. We are seeking a passionate, flexible, and people-oriented candidate to join our Education team who will assist in bringing playful experiences to audiences of all ages.

Job Overview

The Museum Educator will engage individuals and groups with classes, demonstrations, activities, and experiences around a variety of STEM topics. Educators regularly facilitate live experiences onsite at the Michigan Science Center in Midtown Detroit, offsite through the Traveling Science program, as well as for online/virtual audiences.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide high energy, entertaining, educational, and FUN science programming to a wide variety of audiences
  • Engage with audiences of all ages in the museum, at off-site events, and in virtual settings with experiences and interactions that spark curiosity and a better understanding of our world through STE(A)M
  • Guide visitor and student exploration in STE(A)M through playful learning experiences
  • Execute processes and procedures in daily opening/closing, activities’ prep, program facilitation, and exhibit upkeep
  • Assist in evaluating all programs and performances by utilizing surveys and recommending areas of improvement
  • Participate in training led by Michigan Science Center managers and leaders, as well as external professional development opportunities

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • Knowledgeable OR curious about physical sciences, life sciences, space sciences, engineering and/or technology
  • Confidence in presenting public programs for large and small groups, as well as one-on-one interactions
  • Comfortable using videoconferencing equipment and software (Zoom, Google Meet, Cisco Webex)
  • Must be able to learn new information (STE(A)M-based/relevant) in a short amount of time and present to others with accuracy
  • Must be comfortable and capable working with audiences of diverse age, gender, socio-economic and ethnic background
  • Must not have legal restrictions on working with children
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to bend, lift up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and have sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Summer Camp Educator will display passion and enthusiasm when delivering educational STE(A)M programs to campers in grades K-5. During each week, campers will explore Mi-Sci’s 220+ interactive exhibits, engage in immersive theater experiences, and investigate science phenomena through playful learning activities and hands-on experiments. DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead daily STE(A)M activities and demonstrations with the assigned camp group
  • Guide camper learning in Mi-Sci exhibit galleries
  • Supervise campers during daily lunch and recess time to ensure camper safety
  • Accompany campers on off-site field trips as they pertain to the camp theme
  • Execute processes and procedures in daily check-in and check-out, activity prep, activity facilitation, and classroom upkeep
  • Keep track of daily activities, schedules, and camper behaviors
  • Communicate with campers’ families at check-in/out and by posting photos and daily updates to our online family portal
  • Assist in maintaining camp materials inventory and upkeep of camp spaces

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with elementary aged children. Classroom and behavioral management experience preferred

The Manager of Floor Experience & Engagement is a highly-visible leader who sets the tone, coordinates the experience, delivers compelling STEM content, and supports staff and volunteers in creating memorable, family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages.

DESCRIPTION

Reporting jointly to the Managing Director of Engagement and the Managing Director of Experience, the Manager of Floor Experience & Engagement is responsible for the day-to-day execution of Mi-Sci’s public-facing operations during open hours. This position serves as the primary manager on duty for the public floor, coordinating staff deployment, guest experience, live demonstrations, stage programming, operational readiness, and safety across exhibits, theaters, stages, and public spaces.

The Manager of Floor Experience & Engagement is expected to be hands-on and highly visible, capable of stepping into live demonstrations, leading stage activities, representing Mi-Sci on camera for media or promotional opportunities, and coaching staff in real time. This role will share responsibilities with other floor positions, providing alternating coverage to ensure consistent leadership presence during public hours, including weekdays and weekends, through coordinated scheduling.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Floor Operations Leadership and Real-Time “On Floor” Coordination (30%)

Ensures smooth, safe, and well-coordinated daily public programming and operations across all floor environments, including stages and theater spaces.

  • Serve as the primary Manager on Duty (MOD) during assigned public hours, acting as the central point of coordination for floor activity.
  • Coordinate staffing coverage, deployment, and transitions across galleries, theaters, stages, and public zones based on real-time guest flow, field trips, and events.
  • Act as the communication hub between Engagement and Experience teams, ensuring clarity, responsiveness, and alignment throughout the day.
  • Adjust schedules, demonstrations, programs, and activations in real time to maintain flow, guest satisfaction, and operational efficiency.
  • Support the everyday readiness of public spaces and collaborate with technical, theater, and facilities teams to resolve operational issues quickly.

2. Guest Experience, Engagement Strategy, and Hospitality Leadership (25%)

Creates welcoming, joyful, and memorable experiences for guests through intentional engagement and human-centered service.

  • Set the tone, energy, and hospitality standard for the public floor, modeling warmth, inclusivity, and professionalism.
  • Facilitate Mi-Sci’s daily guest engagement strategy, ensuring fun, K–12 school- and family-friendly experiences throughout weekdays and weekends.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for guest concerns and service recovery, turning challenges into positive experiences whenever possible.
  • Support wayfinding, guest communication, and clarity around schedules, programs, and experiences.
  • Ensure guest interactions and experiences align with Mi-Sci’s Quality Standards and commitment to putting YOU at the center of science.

3. Live Demonstrations, Stage Programming, and Media Presence (20%)

Brings science to life through performance, presentation, and public-facing storytelling.

  • Co-design, perform, and lead LIVE SCIENCE programming and demonstrations, pop-up STEAM activities, and stage-based programming as needed.
  • Train, support, and elevate educators, presenters, performers, and on-floor engagement staff.
  • Engage guests directly through inquiry-based facilitation, storytelling, and interactive learning moments.
  • Serve as an on-camera representative for Mi-Sci during media interviews, promotional opportunities, and special events when appropriate.
  • Help ensure consistent quality, safety, and energy across all live and facilitated experiences.

4. Staff Coaching, Training, and Safety Leadership (15%)

Builds confident, capable, and guest-centered teams through coaching, training, and preparedness.

  • Coach and mentor staff and volunteers in excellent customer service, guest engagement, and professional presence.
  • Facilitate on-the-floor training related to demonstrations, communication, hospitality, and engagement best practices.
  • Support training and readiness around emergency preparedness, safety protocols, and incident response to ensure a secure environment for guests, staff, and volunteers.
  • Reinforce expectations, standards, and best practices through modeling and real-time feedback.

5. Systems, Tools, and Continuous Improvement (10%)

Supports operational excellence through effective tools, documentation, and innovation.

  • Utilize office productivity software and applications (scheduling, documents, presentations, communication tools) to support daily operations and coordination.
  • Comfortably and creatively use AI tools to assist with planning, communication, training resources, and guest engagement strategies, where appropriate.
  • Participate in daily debriefs, reflections, and continuous improvement efforts to strengthen floor operations and guest experience.
  • Document insights, patterns, and opportunities to inform leadership and improve future programming and operations.

EXPERIENCE

  • 3-5 years of experience in guest experience, operations, education, customer service, hospitality, performing arts, or related fields
  • 3-5 years in a supervisory role leading staff, volunteers, and/or teams
  • Experience coaching or training staff and volunteers preferred
  • Experience performing demonstrations, presentations, or stage-based programming preferred
  • Experience in museums, science centers, cultural institutions, or visitor attractions strongly preferred

EDUCATION

B.A. or B.S. from an accredited four-year college or university (required)

Degree in education, STEM, communications, hospitality, or related field (preferred)

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Driver’s License. No other formal certificates required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to lift up to 40-50 lbs. and, with reasonable accommodation, move throughout the building, stand for extended periods, operate demonstrations, and support hands-on activities and emergency response if required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Works primarily onsite in public-facing environments, including galleries, theaters, stages, and event spaces. The schedule includes weekdays and weekends, with variable shifts to ensure coverage during public hours. Weekend, holiday, and evening work may be required during special events, media engagements, and high-volume days.
