General Internship – Lakeshore Museum Center (3/15/26)

The Lakeshore Museum Center (LMC) is seeking an energetic and engaged individual for a General Internship during the summer of 2026. This internship will be paid via a stipend upon completion.

The internship offers a well-rounded, hands-on experience working across multiple departments and at various Lakeshore Museum Center sites. This position is ideal for students or emerging professionals interested in museums, public history, nonprofit work, or cultural institutions.

Commitment & Logistics

  • Duration: Flexible, Summer 2026
  • Location: On-site at the Lakeshore Museum Center in Muskegon, MI
  • Hours: Flexible 12-20 hours per week
  • Availability: Some weekend availability is preferred
  • College Credit: Students seeking college credit must provide the appropriate paperwork to intern supervisor in accordance with their school’s policy.
  • Areas of Focus: Students will work with supervisors in each of the following areas during their general internship: Exhibits, Education, Collections, Archives, Historic Sites, and Muskegon Heritage Museum of Business and Industry.

Internship Responsibilities & Focus

This internship is designed to provide a valuable, real-world experience in the museum field. The intern will:

  • Work closely with museum professionals who will serve as your mentors and supervisors.
  • Gain hands-on experience in educational programs and outreaches.
  • Assist in research, curatorial projects, and interpretation at the Historic Sites.
  • Grow their knowledge of business and industry in Muskegon while assisting in day-to-day museum operations at the Muskegon Heritage Museum of Business and Industry.
  • Catalog objects and archival collections using Past Perfect Software.
  • Participate in major exhibit installations and/or the daily activities of the exhibits department.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. High School Seniors MAY apply with a letter of recommendation from a career counselor.
  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, OR a recent graduate with a BA/BS in a related field such as Museum Studies, Public History, or History.
