Opening its doors in November 2025, the A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Center for the Performing Arts and the Richard and Jane Manoogian Art Gallery (Schaap Center) will be a new hub for creativity, connection, and community in the Jefferson Avenue cultural corridor, spanning through the Detroit and Grosse Pointe communities. With state-of-the-art performance and exhibition spaces, the Schaap Center will host year-round programming featuring both permanent and visiting partners across the visual and performing arts.

As we prepare for our inaugural year of operations, the Schaap Center seeks a visionary and entrepreneurial Executive Director to lead the organization through its exciting launch and beyond. This role offers a rare opportunity to shape the immediate and long-term direction of a brand-new arts center and ensure its sustainability for generations to come.

Position Summary

The Executive Director will serve as the chief executive of the Schaap Center, reporting to the Board of Directors and overseeing all aspects of organizational leadership, including governance, fundraising, programming, operations, marketing, and community engagement. As part of this work, the Executive Director will ensure that the Schaap Center is accessible and affordable for all members of the community and will play a key role in building and maintaining the Center’s presence within the broader regional arts corridor.

This dynamic leader will supervise a team of director-level and administrative staff spanning development, marketing/communications, technical, hospitality, and facilities management. The successful candidate will be a relationship-builder with the proven ability to launch, sustain, and grow a nonprofit arts organization, while maintaining the highest standards of artistic, educational, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Governance

  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors; support strong governance, strategic direction, and fiduciary oversight.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Ensure sound financial management, including budgeting, audits, and compliance with nonprofit best practices.

Finance

  • Oversee the development and management of the annual operating budget in collaboration with the Board and Finance Committee.
  • Ensure accurate, timely financial reporting and compliance with audits, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Maintain financial transparency and sustainability to support both current operations and long-term growth.

Fundraising & Development

  • Raise $1 million annually.
  • Design and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy, including operating and endowment support through major gifts, sponsorships, grants, and special events.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with donors, foundations, corporations, and community partners.

Operations & Administration

  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including finance, facilities, and human resources.
  • Hire, manage, and mentor a professional staff team.
  • Ensure operational systems and processes align with best practices and long-term sustainability.

Marketing & Communications

  • Lead strategic communications, branding, and marketing initiatives to grow visibility, audience engagement, and community impact.
  • Oversee the Schaap Center’s website and digital/social media platforms to expand reach and engagement.
  • Serve as a public ambassador for the Schaap Center, representing the organization locally, regionally, and nationally.

Partner & Patron Engagement

  • Manage and strengthen relationships with artistic, educational, and community partners to ensure collaborative success.
  • Champion accessibility, inclusion, and diverse participation across all programs and services.
  • Ensure an exceptional patron experience for audiences and a positive partner experience for collaborating organizations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit management, arts administration, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, board engagement, and community partnerships.
  • Strong background in operations, finance, and organizational management.

Compensation & Application

Technical Manager

Position Summary

The Technical Manager will oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of all technical aspects of performances, exhibitions, and special events at the Schaap Center. This position ensures that lighting, sound, staging, projection, rigging, and related production elements are delivered with the highest level of quality, safety, and efficiency.

Reporting to the Facilities/IT Director, the Technical Manager will serve as a key liaison between program partners, their production staff, and the Schaap Center team. As a founding member of the operations staff, the Technical Manager will play a vital role in establishing technical standards, maintaining equipment, and ensuring that the Schaap Center’s state-of-the-art facilities support artistic and community programming.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all technical operations for performances, exhibitions, rentals, and special events, including lighting, sound, projection, staging, and rigging.
  • Coordinate with artists, production teams, and partners to assess and fulfill technical requirements.
  • Oversee the setup, operation, and strike of technical equipment for events.
  • Facilitate move-in, load-in, and load-out of equipment, scenery, and materials, coordinating closely with artists, vendors, and production teams to ensure smooth logistics.
  • Maintain, inventory, and schedule preventive maintenance of all technical systems, equipment, and tools.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, building codes, and industry standards; train staff and volunteers in safe practices.
  • Collaborate with the Facilities/IT Director to establish technical procedures, budgets, and long-term equipment planning.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise technical contractors, stagehands, and crew as needed.
  • Provide hands-on support and troubleshooting during rehearsals, performances, and events.
  • Develop and manage technical documentation, including cue sheets, rigging plots, and event specifications.
  • Support exhibitions and visual art installations with technical and AV requirements. Serve as a visible and professional representative of the Schaap Center when interacting with artists, partners, and patrons.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in technical theater, live event production, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of lighting, sound, rigging, projection, and stagecraft.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to manage complex technical requirements under pressure.
  • Supervisory experience, including working with stage crews or contractors.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with artists, production staff, and venue colleagues.
  • Knowledge of industry-standard safety practices and OSHA guidelines.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays in alignment with performance and exhibition schedules.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical theater, production management, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Experience with new or start-up venues and the creation of technical systems or workflows.
  • Proficiency with CAD or other drafting software for technical planning.
  •  Familiarity with gallery/exhibition installation and audiovisual technologies.
  • Certification(s) in rigging, OSHA safety, or related technical fields.

Maintenance Manager

Position Summary

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for the care, repair, and operational readiness of the Schaap Center’s building systems and facilities. Reporting to the Facilities/IT Director, this position oversees daily custodial and maintenance functions, supervises custodial/maintenance staff and contractors, and ensures that all building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, safety, and security) are maintained at the highest standard.

The Maintenance Manager plays a key role in supporting events, exhibitions, and performances by coordinating room setups, responding to urgent maintenance issues, and ensuring the venue remains clean, safe, and welcoming for all.

Key Responsibilities

Building & Systems Maintenance

  • Oversee and provide hands-on day-to-day maintenance and repair of the facility, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules and ensure compliance with safety and building codes.
  • Monitor building systems, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate timely repairs with internal staff or contractors.
  • Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and order as needed.

Custodial & Facility Care

  • Supervise custodial operations to ensure clean and orderly facilities, including lobbies, restrooms, offices, and event spaces.
  • Establish and uphold cleanliness and safety standards throughout public and staff areas.
  • Ensure proper storage, use, and disposal of cleaning and maintenance chemicals and supplies.

Event Support & Facility Readiness

  • Coordinate with Patron Services and Technical teams to provide facility support for performances, exhibitions, and events.
  • Oversee room and equipment setup/teardown for events, meetings, and community programs.
  • Provide on-site support during events as needed, including troubleshooting facility issues.

Supervision & Administration

  • Recruit, train, and supervise custodial and maintenance staff, as well as contractors/vendors.
  • Work with the Facilities/IT Director to manage budgets for maintenance, custodial services, and repairs.
  • Assist in developing policies, procedures, and emergency preparedness plans related to facility care.
  • Ensure proper documentation of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in facilities maintenance, building operations, or custodial services, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as custodial best practices.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with ability to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with colleagues, contractors, and community partners.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and workplace safety practices.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed for events and emergencies.

Preferred

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in facilities management, engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience in a performing arts, museum, or event venue setting.
  • Certifications in facilities maintenance, HVAC, or building operations are a plus.
  • Familiarity with IT-enabled building systems (energy management, security access, etc.).

The Facilities/IT Director is a senior leadership role responsible for the overall management of the Schaap Center’s facilities and technology infrastructure. This includes building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, security, and life safety), custodial and maintenance services, IT systems and networks, and event-related facility support. The Director will ensure that the building and its technology operate safely, efficiently, and reliably to support the Schaap Center’s mission and programming.

This position will lead a team of staff and contractors, oversee emergency preparedness and safety procedures, and manage capital improvement projects. The Director will also supervise the Technical Manager, Maintenance Manager, and other facilities staff, and collaborate closely with programming, patron services, and administrative departments.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Management

  • Oversee and provides hands-on day-to-day operation and maintenance of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, security, and fire/life safety.
  • Manage custodial services and ensure cleanliness, safety, and readiness of all public and back-of-house spaces.
  • Coordinate and supervise outside contractors and vendors for facility-related services.
  • Plan and execute preventive maintenance schedules and long-term capital projects.
  • Ensure compliance with building codes, OSHA standards, and safety regulations.

IT and Technology

  • Oversee all IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, telecommunications, ticketing integration, and AV systems.
  • Manage data security, technology support, and systems maintenance for staff and patron-facing platforms.

Operations & Administration

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management, operations, or IT leadership, preferably in an arts, cultural, higher education, or complex event venue setting.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, life safety).
  • Demonstrated experience with IT infrastructure, systems integration, and cybersecurity.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills with experience managing staff and vendors.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and respond effectively to emergencies.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays in alignment with events and performances.
