Title: Exhibits Technician 1

Department: Exhibits and Collections

Pay Rate: $33,280-$34,320 annually

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Reports to: Exhibits Designer

Hours and Schedule: Monday-Friday 40 hours/week. Occasional weekends and evenings.

About this Position: Do you enjoy hands-on, creative work? Are you attentive to detail and a skilled problem-solver? The Exhibits Technician 1 maintains the look and function of existing exhibits and assists in the creation of new exhibits across all the museum’s sites. This position is part of the Exhibits and Collections Department and reports to the Exhibits Designer. A successful candidate will possess strong design, fabrication, and visualization skills and contribute a positive mental attitude to the production team and the work.

Museum Mission: To tell the story of Muskegon County by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of its people and natural environment.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Creative and effective problem-solving skills and visualization skills.
  • Experience in fabrication methods (including woodworking, metalworking, and plastic forming) and construction.
  • Proficiency in graphic design software, including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Experience in creating and repairing small electronics systems.
  • Experience operating shop equipment and power tools.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting problems and performing repairs.
  • Works effectively independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in setting and meeting deadlines.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Occasionally moves materials and equipment up to 50 lbs and ascends, descends, and works on ladders.
  • Clean driving record. A valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient at developing mechanical or technological solutions for interactive exhibit components.
  • Knowledge of 3D modeling software such as SketchUp, Rhinoceros 3D, AutoCAD, etc.
  • Knowledge of computer programming languages such as Python, C++, Java, etc.
  • Knowledge of implementing, troubleshooting, and repairing audio/visual, lighting, and computer systems.
  • Experience working with museum exhibits, displays, or set design.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily exhibit inspections of exhibit components.
  • Perform routine exhibit maintenance work and monitor exhibit spaces for repairs, cleaning, and general upkeep.
  • Assist the Exhibits Designer with producing graphics and designing exhibit components.
  • Work with the Exhibits staff, Programming staff, and Exhibit Lead to plan and design exhibits.
  • Work with the Exhibits staff and Maintenance staff to fabricate, construct, and install new exhibits.
  • Work with the Collections Manager when handling museum objects.
  • Fabricate durable and quality display mounts, exhibit structures, and elements from design sketches.
  • Maintain the Exhibits Repair Log by documenting repairs needed, solutions applied, materials used, and costs involved.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace and equipment.
  • Participate in regular cleaning of exhibit galleries.
  • Participate in Exhibits Committee meetings.
  • Assists in the estimation of production costs and scheduling of exhibit construction.
  • Communicate with the Exhibits Designer for daily tasks, planning, spending, scheduling, feedback, and guidelines. Provide receipts and purchase orders to the Exhibits Designer.
  • Assist with museum projects and special events, and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Research ideas, inspiration, and creative solutions for exhibit mounts, structures, and elements, including interactive and hands-on elements.
