Museum Education Associate– Michigan Maritime Museum

The Michigan Maritime Museum (MMM) is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual for an Education Associate, this position is part-time with the possibility of full-time. This position will be paid $15-20 an hour depending on experience. This position represents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the preservation and interpretation of our Great Lakes maritime heritage.

Commitment & Logistics

  • Position Title: Education Associate
  • Supervisor: Head of Education
  • Location: On-site at the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven, MI
  • Schedule: 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM, Wednesday-Sunday: May-September, and Tuesday- Saturday: October-April.
  • Hours: Flexible, starting with 20 hours and up to 40.
  • Availability: Weekend availability is required.

Education Associate Responsibilities & Focus

  • Gain hands-on experience in conducting and developing educational programs and materials.
  • Enhance their skills in historical interpretation for diverse audiences.
  • Grow their abilities in visitor services.

Specific activities will include:

  • Learning to conduct and lead diverse programs and tours, including field trips, day camps, school outreach lessons, public programming, and serving as a docent.
  • Helping visitors make personal connections with history by interpreting historic events for a wide range of ages and audiences.
  • Creating original educational programming (e.g., weekend activities, camp activities, lessons).
  • Assisting in revising and adapting educational lessons for different school grades and learning levels.
  • Learning the basics of visitor service, including greeting and interacting with museum guests in a friendly and professional manner.

Qualifications

Education: A degree in education, history, or a related field is helpful, but not required. Relevant experience and skills are equally valued. We are seeking someone who brings enthusiasm for working with learners of all ages—especially children—and who can create engaging, memorable educational experiences. An interest in, or familiarity with, Great Lakes maritime history and/or ecology is strongly preferred.

  • Experience working with children and young people.
  • Ability to manage people and projects in a creative and fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.
  • Ability to create an atmosphere of teamwork and positive energy.
