MI Museum Spotlight:
Finding the Taylors at the Birmingham Museum and Lessons from the Pandemic

Thursday, April 14
10:00 am

During the tumult of 2020, the Birmingham Museum found an unexpected silver lining. Staff had the opportunity to dig into the community’s past more deeply with the help of passionate community members. That investigation uncovered a large and yet untold story of Birmingham’s Black history.

Museum Specialists Caitlin Donnelly and Donna Casaceli will share the story of the Taylor family, whose story takes us along the Underground Railroad, out west to Kansas and back to Oakland County. Along the way, they sought after family members who had been torn from them during slavery and they formed new connections with other Black families in the area. Staff will also be sharing ways in which Birmingham’s modern community is sharing and memorializing its Black history.

The MI Museum Spotlight program gives MMA members the chance to share their work with colleagues. Contact Lisa Craig Brisson if you are an MMA member with something to share.
