About the Opportunity

Kalamazoo Valley is seeking a full time Theater and Planetarium Technologist for the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. The essential duties and responsibilities of this position are to:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations, development, and maintenance of the Mary Jane Stryker Theater technology, provide technological support in the planetarium, and provide consultation support for complex technologies used in the Museum’s exhibits.
  • Serve as liaison with IT and media contractors/vendors to assist in trouble-shooting technologies.
  • Operate, maintain, and update the planetarium console and theater control room.
  • Fully leverage technology to expand the use of the Mary Jane Stryker Theater for educational programming, Kalamazoo Valley instructional use, and other community partnerships.
  • Knowledgeably present and interpret scientific/astronomical concepts to visitors and assist, as needed, with operations training to develop interpretive skills relating to astronomy and related subject matter.
  • Lead operators and interpretive staff while in the theater and support other Museum programming and events, as needed.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and provide input to the future design and new exhibits that seek to integrate interactive technologies that support immersive simulations and other interactive experiences.
  • Make recommendations for updating equipment, software, and other related needs related to the successful use of the Museum’s theater and planetarium spaces.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of complex integrated audio visual systems (including sound, lighting, and projection).
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in providing excellent customer service.
  • Skill in maintaining equipment
  • Skill in troubleshooting and learning new technologies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Appropriate education, training, experience and talents are requirements for this position. An example of this would be a high school diploma or equivalent and one year of related prior experience.

Working hours are Monday-Friday 8:00-5:00pm, but hours will be flexed to accommodate availability on some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
