JOB SUMMARY

The Controller is responsible for overseeing all finance, accounting, and reporting activities. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will support presentations to the Board of Directors Finance Committee and work closely with the Executive leadership team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee day-to-day finance operations, including processing accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash receipts.
  • Manage the month-end close process of accounting records and ensure accuracy of the general ledger.
  • Prepare timely and accurate monthly financial reports.
  • Review and analyze financial statements regularly.
  • Establish and review internal controls to safeguard the Museum’s assets.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP standards, IRS regulations and other regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate audit activities with third party firms and generate accurate financial reports.
  • Collaborate with organizational leaders during the annual budgetary process.
  • Manage bank relationships.
  • Participate in museum strategic planning initiatives.
  • Assist in evaluation and modeling new business opportunities.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the Finance Committee and the Board Treasurer.
  • Present financial information to the Board of Directors.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or a related field required, master’s degree in business administration (MBA) OR hold a certified public accountant (CPA) designation preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience with a non-profit organization or museum
  • Experience with financial management, budgeting, and financial reporting is required.
  • Familiarity with not-for-profit GAAP, IRS regulations, and other financial standards is crucial.
  • Exposure to strategic planning and evaluating new business opportunities is preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Thorough understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, financial reporting, and budgeting specific to museums.
  • Ability to analyze financial data, manage budgets, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit structures, board relations, and legal requirements.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with board members and committees.
  • Ability to align financial strategies with organizational objectives.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Extremely organized and meticulous with details.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to prioritize work and resources.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret financial data and prepare budgets and assist with financial grant reports.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Available Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm, flexibility for occasional weekend and on call support.
  • Hours and days to be determined by the business needs of the organization and are subject to change.
  • Occasional travel as needed.
