GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This person will be responsible for the management of the material culture collection of the Sloan Museum of Discovery. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, cataloging, housing, numbering, and ensuring the overall proper care of artifacts. This role includes writing and review of policies, the execution of the museum’s Integrated Pest Management Plan and Environmental Monitoring Program, inventories, and collections moves. This is not a managerial level role and reports to the Curator of Collections.

Job Description and Qualifications:

RESPONSIBLITIES

  1. Performs all collections management functions, including describing, cataloging, rehousing, and storing artifacts.
  2. In tandem with the Archivist, manages and organizes collection storage areas.
  3. Oversees cataloging and data-entry standards for the collection database.
  4. Assists the Registrar & Exhibits Liaison with preparing artifacts for exhibition, including artifact mounting.
  5. Writes, reviews, and updates existing collections policies and procedures.
  6. Coordinates with the Archivist on cyclical cleaning and maintenance of collection storage areas.
  7. In tandem with the Archivist, facilitates access to museum artifacts to staff members and public tour groups.
  8. Conducts the Integrated Pest Management Plan and the Environmental Monitoring Program.
  9. Performs regular inventories of the collection.
  10. Performs research on collection artifacts.
  11. Assists in writing grants for special projects related to processing, digitizing, and conserving three-dimensional materials.
  12. Serves on the Collections Committee.
  13. Supervises volunteers, interns, and contract employees, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  1. Master's degree in Museum Studies or a similar discipline preferred.
  2. 3-5 years cumulative experience working with a museum collection.
  3. Experience with proper handling, care, and storage of artifacts; specifically, relocating large artifacts and large collections.
  4. A firm understanding of museum standards and practices for preservation of cultural heritage.
  5. Experience working with previously unmanaged collections and resolving issues of provenance and ownership.
  6. Experience with Collections Management Software; PastPerfect is ideal.
  7. Ability to exercise independent judgment, highly motivated with excellent writing, organization, creative problem solving, and project management skills.
  8. Team builder, able to work effectively with others with tact and courtesy.
