"During this difficult time, MMA provided a much needed light by connecting me with other people who were able to
share experiences. I was not alone!  It was priceless help during a dark time."

-Nheena Ittner, Upper Peninsula Children's Museum-

Normally, we would be touching base to ask you to support the conference scholarship fund this time of year. As with most things in 2020, we are doing something a little different this year. Instead of supporting other members, we are asking you to help support the Michigan Museums Association (MMA) directly as we work to serve the Michigan museum community during this challenging time.

As you know, we have cancelled all in-person programs for 2020. This means we have lost a significant amount of revenue from conference registrations, vendors, advertisers, and sponsors. The cancellations also led to a cut in expenses, and we have tightened up everywhere we can, but we still project a loss for the current fiscal year.

"We are thankful that MMA was able to react so quickly to set up regular discussion groups for sharing ideas and strategies. MMA helped our museum take advantage of the shutdown and emerge from it in a better situation than we otherwise would have."
-Paul Talpos,
Dearborn Historical Museum-

MMA has pivoted all of our efforts to support the Michigan museum community and our members as best we can. We’ve created online programs to bring you together, searched for and shared resources to address your changing needs during the pandemic crisis, and advocated for financial relief and support from both federal and state agencies. We established a social media campaign to amplify your efforts to serve audiences remotely and created a free COVID-19 membership to support those furloughed or laid off during the crisis. We will continue to look for new and better ways to support you as you continue to respond to situations and needs that are arising as the crisis continues. We look forward to a time when we can focus on thriving again, not just surviving.

The foundation of MMA has always been our members and the museum community. You make our work possible. There are several ways you can support MMA at this time:

Join or renew your membership: Annual paid memberships provide a layer of financial support that allows us to make plans and hire staff. We are not sending renewal notifications during this time, but you can login to check your member status and renew if it is due. New members are always welcomed enthusiastically.

Make a donation: We will still have our annual year-end appeal, but even a small donation now will help offset some of our financial losses and help us prepare for the next few months.

Participate: Your involvement in our programs and projects makes them possible and helps us better serve the entire Michigan museum community. When you join a Colleague Chat or volunteer for a project team, it creates a ripple effect that serves the broader state-wide community.

Thank you for the connection you have to MMA, and all you are doing for your community. We appreciate you!
