Foster, Develop and Sustain Leadership

Help emerging and mid-level professionals gain leadership skills to empower and engage the future leadership of the profession.

Possible Strategies:

  • Use members to lead projects and volunteer teams.
  • Provide professional development opportunities related to leadership skill building.
  • Offer a paid MMA internship to an emerging museum professional students.
  • Explore the possibility of facilitating a paid internship program in Michigan museums.

Support those in leadership positions to sustain effective organizations.

  • Offer the opportunity to provide support for MMA programs.
  • Develop an opportunity to connect with other leaders through events and groups.

Encourage a broad understanding of leadership and the ability to lead from every role.

Support and Advance Social Justice in Museums

Work to diversify the MMA Board of Directors to include racial representation that reflects the statewide community.

Possible Strategies:

  • Articulate MMA’s diversity, inclusion, equity and access goals to members.
  • Implement tools to understand the cultural and racial representation in the Michigan museum community.
  • Actively identify and engage MMA members that represent racial and cultural groups not currently widely involved.
  • Proactively invite MMA members that represent racial and cultural groups not currently widely involved to consider membership on the MMA Board.

Promote an awareness and understanding of the role museums and their staff play in Social Justice.

Possible Strategies:

  • Offer professional development opportunities to learn about and discuss social justice issues in museums.
  • Provide and promote resources related to social justice.

Provide opportunities for under-resourced and under-represented museum-related individuals to participate in the Michigan museum community.

Possible Strategies:

  • Ensure an affordable option to participate in MMA programs and events.
  • Promote fair wages and paid internships in the field.

Promote Community Driven Professional Development Goals

Increase Core Competencies and Promote Best Practice

Possible Strategies:

  • Share professional development resources and opportunities from a broad range of reliable sources.
  • Recognize MMA members that have achieved certification, accreditation, or other achievements related to the field.

    Ensure that MMA offers professional development resources and opportunities that address the current needs of a range of members.

    Possible Strategies:

    • Identify different groups within the MMA community that have unique professional development needs.
    • Develop processes to engage with members in a way that allows for a general understanding of their work and their professional development needs.
