Federal Formula Grants Update August 17, 2007

What is the Federal Formula Grants Initiative?

MMA has signed on to an initiative led by the American Association for State and Local History to work toward federal funding for museums throughout the United States. AASLH has hired a lobbyist to work with members of Congress to support 2009 reauthorization of the Institute of Museum and Library Services funding to include formula grants to be given to the states to support grants to museums of all types, history, art, science, children's, zoo, and nature centers. Funding for this initiative would NOT replace any existing funding that IMLS currently receives.

The Coalition meets on a regular basis and is currently working to draft legislative language. MMA will continue to keep you updated as the initiative progresses. Below are links to articles and Frequently Asked Questions about the Federal Formula Grants Initiative.

What can you do?

Eventually, MMA will ask its members to contact their US Senators and Congresspeople to express support for the 2009 reauthorization of funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services to include federal funding for museums.

In the meantime, we should all be supporting IMLS' current (2008) reauthorization. Please contact your members of congress and ask them to continue to support museums around the nation through funding for IMLS.
